Samvaad
(A Dialogue)

Samvaad screening aims to bring video works from young emerging artists from different parts of the world working†in UK.
I felt there was a need to share more & more international video art. So Samvaad is an endeavor to explore, investigate, create and find links and start a SAMVAAD –a dialogue with diverse practices & sensibilities of diaspora artists living in the state of flux in different parts of the world.
Ehsan Fardjadniya was born and brought up in Iran and has been living in Netherlands ,Deniz Sozen who is of Turkish origin works between Vienna ,Istanbul and London Guler Antes is also of Turkish origin and lives and works between London and Istanbul, Iva Kontic from Serbia,Sidsel Christensen from Norway ,Jihye Park from South Korea , Chinmoyi Patel & Sabrina Osborne from India.

They all have their own varied concerns :
Sidsel Christensen is interested in subjectivity between authentic & fictional constructs of self and possibility of imagination to transform the perceived reality of an individual which links emotive visions and the visual language of abstraction in art.††
Rachel Russell’s work deals with Performance as an act of labour : questioning the notion of identity through cultural and individual myths.

Rachel Garfield works with the role of narrative in the formation of subjectivity and in assumptions of the subject in relation to power, history and place, which particularly involves a sense of out- of –place ness: whether tension between public and private; personal and social or past and present.

Jihye Park is interested in the fantastical, the horrific and the paradoxical elements of fairy tales. . Her work explores the space between idealised love, banal love and tragic love. Park is fascinated with memories and notions of darkness. Harnessing visual elements of pastiche, she attempts to circumvent that which cannot be said with dialogue or plot, rather relying on an ambience of sadness, grief and nothingness. The grief experienced by Park’s character is motivated by the devastating death of her beloved father.

Chinmoyi Patel is interested in ascertaining a sense of her own reality through repetitive acts of play – adopting different personas, exploring fantastical spaces and make-believe in story telling, working with the notion of Henry Lefebvre’s ‘transfunctional’ play; as way of metabolizing reality or our experience of it.
Kate Pickering’s work contains the threat and embarrassment of sincerity, either disturbing or entrancing with the confident passion of a believer, thereby reflecting back the position of the viewer. The work pictures the artist as evangelical preacher.
Deniz Sozen’s surreal narrative allows present and past, the mosque and the cinema to exist simultaneously in diachronic confusion.

Constructs of juxtapositions struggle with notions of dislocation, relocation and isolation in Sabrina Osborne’s work, build the feeling of estrangement linked with memory, identity and loss.
Iva Kontic has weaved in her work the simple joy of the ability to remember, which might even go beyond one’s recent past events of political connotations.
An exploration into the bewildering experience of displacement lies at the heart of Guler’s work. She is engaged with the potential of pattern and motif within Islamic art.
Emma Hunt’s artistic practice is pointed towards an anthropological rationale, employing research methods such as observation, participation and documentation, examining the relationship between the subject and the object, with specific reference to the photographic gaze and its construction in social space, thus questioning the process of identity construction of individuals in an urban environment.
